Summer Hair Care Tips: Keeping Your Hair Healthy & Nourished

Summer’s here! And that means so is humidity, frizz, sun, salt, and chlorine.

For anyone with thick hair—especially Black hair—these elements that make the summer so enjoyable can also wreak havoc on your hair. They strip moisture, dull shine, and weaken strands.

But with the right summer hair care routine and products, you can enjoy the sun and water while maintaining strong, healthy hair. Good news for you is

Lucky Heart Cosmetics has the perfect summer hair care tips and the products to go with them that will have your hair loving the pool and beach as much as you do.

Let’s dive in!

Protect Before You Swim

Pre-swim hydration is essential to keeping the chlorine or saltwater from drying out your hair. Just like you prep your skin before sun exposure, prepping your hair is just as crucial.

Your hair is absorbent, so if it’s completely dry when you dive into the water, it will soak up whatever is in that water. If that’s chlorine, salt, lake contaminants, it can lead to brittleness, breakage, and even color fading.

So before taking that first plunge:

  1. Soak first: Rinse with fresh water before entering the pool or ocean. Your hair will absorb less chlorine or salt because it's already saturated.
  2. Seal with oil or conditioner: Use a leave-in conditioner or lightweight oil (such as coconut, jojoba, or castor oil). These create a barrier, which is especially important for Black hair and curly hair which are more porous and absorb more chemicals than thin hair.
  3. Braid or bun it: These protective styles reduce tangling, minimize surface exposure, and keep your ends tucked away.

If that’s all too much for you, swim caps can provide excellent hair protection as well. Opt for extra-large silicone swim caps or worn-within caps designed for thick hair.

Pairing them with a satin bonnet can double protection and preserve moisture.

Cleanse & Restore After Swimming

Right after swimming, rinse your hair with lukewarm freshwater to prevent salt/chlorine from sitting and causing damage.

If you’re hitting the pool or beach everyday this summer, you’ll want to add a clarifying shampoo to your weekly wash routine. A sulfate-free clarifying shampoo will help remove buildup of unwanted chemicals.

Try Lucky Heart’s 4-Way Sulfate Free shampoo or the new Tea Tree Shampoo from the Salon Series! It’s infused with antibacterial tea tree oil and refreshing peppermint to deeply cleanse and restore your scalp.

After shampooing, indulge your strands in a rich deep conditioning or hair-mask session 1–2 times per week to lock in moisture.

Summer Routines for Every Hair Type

Your hair type is always going to be the deciding factor in your hair care routine.

Thin/Fine Hair

People with fine hair need lightweight hydration and volume:

  • Clarify gently: Use Tea Tree Shampoo for a light, yet clean feel.
  • Use spray leave-in conditioners: Aloe or water-based formulas won’t weigh your hair down.
  • Balance moisture: Follow with a light oil (argan or grapeseed) to seal hydration without sapping volume.

Curly/Coily Hair

Define your curls while retaining moisture:

  • Use rich, hydrating cleansers: Our 4‑Way collection helps maintain curl definition and elasticity.
  • Use the LOC Method: Leave-in Conditioner (or Liquid) → seal with Oil → Creamy styler
  • Protective styles: Think twists, braids, or buns. This is especially helpful if you're swimming laps or spending most of your time in the water.

Black Hair (Thick & Textured)

This hair type thrives on hydration, gentle care, and sealed strength:

  • Sulfate-free shampoos: Cleanse your hair without stripping away moisture.
  • Deep conditioning rituals: Once a week, use a dense, butter-rich mask (shea butter, avocado, honey) to bring back nourishment.
  • Daily hydration boosters: A water-based mist topped with oil helps maintain softness between wash days.
  • Protective, no-heat styles: Braids, buns, or wigs reduce manipulation and preserve moisture. Sleep on satin to prevent breakage.

Frizz Management for All Hair Types

One thing no one likes to deal with is frizz, and the summer humidity will certainly try its best, but follow these tips to help tame frizz:

  1. Use Humectants (a substance that draws water into itself) & Sealants: Look for glycerin, aloe vera, and panthenol to attract moisture while sealing with oils like coconut, jojoba, or shea butter.
  2. Rinse with Cold Water: Even if you’re a steaming hot shower person all year long, try doing a final cool rinse to help close the cuticle, giving you smoother, shinier strands.
  3. Avoid Overwashing: I know we’ve talked a lot about rinsing and washing up until now, but daily shampooing can strip the scalp. Keep up the rinsing if you’re swimming daily, but otherwise, alternate between gentle shampoo days and conditioner-only co-washes.
  4. Light Stylers & Finishes: Try a leave-in milk or curl cream paired with a serum/oil to lock in definition and tame frizz.
